Crafts and Gastronomy

The gastronomic heritage of Elvas is clearly defined by the Plums of Elvas and the “Sericaia”, traditional conventual sweets from this region. The Plums of Elvas became famous in the nineteenth century, becoming of the most important product of its kind and it was the favourite sweet of the author Agatha Christie… The famous and quite sought-after Bacalhau Dourado (Golden Codfish), is one of the most famous dishes of Elvas, especially after the established record of the world largest ever made Bacalhau Dourado which is now part of the Guinness World Records Book.  

The Craft in the Municipality of Elvas is mainly defined by the cut paper laces that were used to wrap the plum boxes as well as the traditional embroidery, pottery and the well-known “roncas”. Discover our crafts by visiting the crafts workshops in the Street of Quartéis.
