The Military Museum of Elvas

The Military Museum of Elvas is presently located in the facilities of the ancient Regiment of Infantry 8 which was shut down as military lodgings in 2008.

By then, Elvas had lost its last military active bastion: the Regiment of Infantry 8 and with the closure of this unit, the Portuguese Army decided to transform these facilities into the Military Museum of Elvas.

It is one of the biggest museums of the country, where the visitor can observe, besides the grandness of the fortifications, the Quartéis of Casarão, the cloister of the Convent of São Domingos, the Fountain of São José and an amazing set of interesting elements: History of the Health Service of the Army, Horse-Drawn Vehicles and Military Harness of the Army, Interpretation Centre of the Heritage of Elvas and Army Vehicles.

These museum centers have a substantial visible part of fortifications and walls, with explanatory panels and, in the facilities of the old barracks, there are following museum themes opened for public viewing: History of the Health Service of the Army, rooms dedicated to orthopedics, ophthalmology and surgery, vet room, pharmacy room, Military Harness of the Army, with halls dedicated to the Horse, Infantry harnesses, Cavalry harnesses, Artillery harnesses, hall of the Military Affairs and Horse-Drawn Vehicles with rooms dedicated to the weaponry transported by animals, mainly artillery.

These exhibition rooms are former dependencies of the military units that served in Elvas, being the last one the Regiment of Infantry Number 8 – now adapted to a new function, established in historical buildings and trying, whenever possible, to recover its original design.

There are some heavy weapons – artillery – exposed outdoors, with some pieces considered rare, such as the Japanese Howitzer (see picture) and the mystery concerning its arrival in Portugal.
